At Harber London we are experts in the design and manufacture of leather goods, and we pride ourselves in using only high-quality and environmentally responsible materials for our products. This means, we know a thing or two about the different types of leather and their levels of quality.

In this article we will guide you through the wide variety of finishes one can get out of cowhide, and while our products are made using full-grain leather, we describe a few others so you can make a well-informed decision when choosing your next wallet.

Travel documents need to be stored in a way that is both secure and practical, since any photo identification might need to be shown several times, and the constant bringing-out and putting-away could result in the passport being misplaced or lost. Luckily, passport wallets offer the perfect balance between functionality and style, since our designs include multiple options, so you can choose the best one for your needs and focus on your travels.

Full-grain leather: the most durable

Out of all the different types of leather for wallets, full-grain leather is without a doubt the option of the highest quality. This material comes from the outer layer of the cowhide, which means it is the toughest and most durable part. Wallets manufactured with this type of leather look more natural, since high-quality full-grain is not treated with chemicals, and it is not sanded or buffed either, which gives it a particular texture and appearance. They also develop a beautiful patina over time.

At Harber London we use full-grain leather for our wallets, bags, sleeves and many other accessories: the high quality of the materials combined with the expert craftsmanship and design result in premium items that will last for many years while maintaining an impeccable appearance.

Types of Leather for Wallets

Top-grain leather, smooth quality

Another high-quality leather type for wallets, purses, backpacks or sleeves is top grain leather. It is second after full-grain, not only in quality, since it is the second layer of the hide that produces this material. While being durable, it is more pliable due to the process required to treat the surface. This type of leather is sanded and buffed to remove imperfections, so the final appearance is smoother than its full-grain counterpart.

This even and uniform surface does not only affect the overall appearance of the leather, but it also results in a material that is easier to work with, which can be an advantage depending on the piece that will be manufactured. However, this compromises the durability of the leather and its ability to form a beautiful patina over time, as full-grain leather does.

Genuine leather, the least durable layer

After taking the parts needed for full and top-grain leather, the remaining layers are used to manufacture what is known as genuine leather. This material is of a lower quality than the previous two, and it is often processed and treated with a coating that makes it look smoother and protects it from stains and scratches. However, this type of leather is not as durable and the treatment might crack and show signs of wear after some time.

Wallets and accessories made with this sort of material do not last as long as items made with high-quality leather, nor do they maintain their appearance after they have been used.

Piel nobuk, duradera y suave
